Report: Kerr grabs brace as Glory dismantle City
Perth Glory have fired a warning shot to the rest of the Westfield W-League as they defeated Melbourne City 5-2 at nib Stadium on Sunday night.
Two goals from marquee Sam Kerr set Glory on their way as they dismantled reigning Champions City in the final match of rebel Female Football Round.
REACTION: Kerr runs rings around City
Kerr was involved in the action from the outset, proving a handful for the City defence and forcing goalkeeper Lydia Williams to be on her toes to thwart a couple of half-chances.
There was nothing the keeper could do three minutes later however as Kerr sent nib Stadium into raptures with a stunning strike.
Picking up possession at halfway Kerr led City defenders on a merry dance before unleashing a well-placed shot into the far corner that left Williams clutching at thin air.
Kerr then turned provider, as she picked up possession near the penalty box and slid an inch-perfect cross through to Rachel Hill who made no mistake from directly in front to put Perth up by two.
City were gifted a way back into the game when Perth conceded a free-kick just outside the penalty area and Elise Kellond-Knight’s subsequent strike was enough to beat Eliza Campbell.
Any hopes City had of drawing level were quickly dashed however as no less than three minutes later Kerr had found the back of the net again.
In what was almost a direct reversal of Perth’s second goal, Hill found the ball in the penalty box and squared it to Kerr whose strike cannoned off Tyla-Jane Vlajnic and past a despairing Williams.
Alyssa Mautz then nabbed Perth’s fourth, burying the rebound after Leticia McKenna’s shot crashed against the crossbar.
Kellond-Knight was to finish with a brace after Jasmyne Spencer was brought down in the penalty area, her finish from the spot giving Campbell no chance.
But it was to no avail as Mautz grabbed a second, assisted by Kerr, to round out proceedings.
