15 Westfield W-League stars named as Westfield Matildas target Tokyo

Fifteen stars of the Westfield W-League have been selected in Ante Milicic’s 20-played squad that will look to seal progression to the Tokyo 2020 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament when they take on Vietnam home and away in March.

Matildas mentor Milicic has named an identical squad for Australia’s clashes with Vietnam at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle (March 6) and at the Cẩm Phả Stadium in Quảng Ninh Province (March 11) as the one that earned wins over Chinese Taipei and Thailand, and a dramatic draw with China PR, in Sydney earlier this month.

And that includes a host of Westfield W-League stars from five different clubs.

Melbourne City have the most representatives with six, including Emily van Egmond who scored the decisive goal against China that ensured top spot in the group earlier this month.

Brisbane Roar have five players in the Westfield Matildas squad, while Melbourne Victory (two), Sydney FC and Canberra United also have representatives for next month’s vital matches.

“The players that we had in camp in Sydney did a great job to help us advance to the next phase of Olympic qualification,” Milicic said.

“We were in camp for over three weeks, which enabled us to get some great work in both on and off the pitch.

“I look forward to working with these players again in Newcastle and Vietnam as we seek to seal Australia a second football team in Tokyo,” he said.
