'Everyone did their part today': hero Kerr lauds team effort

She’s more than deserving of all the plaudits thrown her way but Sam Kerr isn’t having any of it as her brace led Perth Glory to a vital win over Sydney FC on Friday afternoon.

Kerr starred for the Glory as her two headed goals sent the home side top of the Westfield W-League ladder after their 2-1 victory over the Sky Blues at HBF Park.

The Westfield Matilda struck twice in the second half but speaking to Fox Sports after the game instead took the time to praise her teammates.

“We’ve had so many draws so to get that final goal and get over the line is a relief for the girls but everyone did their part today that’s why it means so much,” Kerr said.

“There was not one bad person on the field for us.”

Kerr copped several knocks as the visitors adopted a physical approach in an attempt to halt the Golden Boot leader.

The West Australian said her job was made easier by a resolute backline.

“I’ve got a bit of a sore leg but when the defence is playing as well as they are and the tackles they’re putting in it’s easy to play like,” Kerr said.

“I thought they were best on ground today the backline they did a great job and they don’t get enough credit.”

Her direct opponent for most of the afternoon, Westfield Matildas teammate Alanna Kennedy, said she was happy with how Sydney continued to fight in what were sweltering conditions.

“It was good game…obviously coming here we know Perth’s a team with a lot of heart and I felt we matched that in the first half but it got away from us in the second half,” Kennedy told Fox Sports post-match.

“I felt like we had some good chances, we’re a team that fights to the end and that’s part of our character so we’ll just continue to build on that.”

When quizzed on her battle with Kerr, Kennedy said she looked forward to it every season.

“I love coming up against Sam she makes me a better player and she’s obviously world class, you saw that in the two goals so what do you expect against her,” she said.

Kerr however didn’t seem as fazed about who she got the better of.

“Mate, any goal’s a goal I don’t really care who it’s against!”
