Foord hat-trick snaps losing streak as Sky Blues demolish Roar
Sydney FC broke a three-match losing streak as they blitzed Brisbane Roar 5-1 at Seymour Shaw on Sunday afternoon.
A hat-trick to Caitlin Foord headlined what was an all-star performance from the home side, launching an unstoppable second-half scoring spree to bury the visitors.
It didn’t take long for Foord to get going, the forward sliding the ball past Roar goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold after being put through on goal by Savannah McCaskill 13 minutes in.
Brisbane’s equaliser was almost a carbon copy, Allira Toby gathering the ball and picking out Yuki Nagasato who rounded the keeper and rolled the ball into the net for her first Westfield W-League goal.
Just under an hour in spectators were treated to a vision of the future when Lisa De Vanna was replaced by Young Matilda Princess Ibini as Sydney went in search of the lead.
REPORT: City too good for Jets
It proved to be a masterstroke when a minute later Ibini picked out Teresa Polias who unleashed a well-struck shot past the flailing Arnold.
Chioma Ubogagu went agonisingly close to nabbing an equaliser soon after when her shot ricocheted off the post and back into play.
Matches often turn on these moments and 66 minutes in Foord doubled both her goal tally and Sydney’s lead with a strong run and finish, holding off defenders as she bore down on goal.
CATLEY: City can go on a run
Any doubt about the result was put to bed three minutes later, Ibini getting on the end of a Sophia Huerta cross and beating Arnold at the near post.
Brisbane searched in vain for a way back into the match but the Sky Blues’ defence held firm, stifling the Roar’s attempts on goal.
Foord notched up her hat-trick in the 83rd minute after some great build-up play split the Roar defence and presented the 24-year old an opportunity which she duly dispatched.
A much-needed confidence booster for Sydney, who started the season as one of the favourites while Brisbane miss an opportunity to move into the top four.
