Friday night football preview: Westfield W-League, A-League - March 19

Perth Glory are in action on both fronts on Friday, March 19 with a Westfield W-League clash with Melbourne City at Dorrien Gardens following an A-League fixture against Western Sydney Wanderers at Bankwest Stadium.

In the Westfield W-League, there's nothing but pride on the line for two sides well out of the Finals Series picture, but desperate to end the 2020/21 campaign on a strong run of form.

Perth Glory host Melbourne City at Dorrien Gardens on Friday night (kick-off 9.35pm AEDT) in search of their first win of the Westfield W-League season.

There's been little to cheer about for Perth in the current campaign, who have one point on the board after nine games, but a positive display in a tight 1-0 loss against Melbourne Victory in Round 12 gave the Glory faithful reason to be optimistic that a long-awaited win is just around the corner.

Melbourne City will be eager for the last two rounds of the 2020/21 season to pass by, and put an end to their dismal Premiership/Championship defence. The all-conquering side of 2019/20 sit one slot above Perth on the Westfield W-League table with just two wins and seven points to their name.

A win in Round 12 over Newcastle Jets gave City a lift, and two games against Glory in Rounds 13 and 14 to round out the season present Rado Vidosic's side the chance to move to 13 points and end the season with three successive wins.

Perth's A-League outfit are without a win in three games, but ninth position on the table is a deceptive reflection of how Glory are placed ahead of their showdown with the second-placed Wanderers (kick-off 7.05pm AEDT).

The Red and Black have 19 points after 12 games whilst Perth have 13 after nine fixtures to date. It leaves Richard Garcia's side with a simple equation on paper: win their games in hand to become Premiers Plate contenders. But, as we've seen through an entertaining 12 Matchweeks to date, a challenge is never as simple as it seems in the 2020/21 A-League campaign.

Perth will be buoyed by a 2-2 draw with the league-leading Central Coast Mariners in Matchweek 12; as will the Wanderers, who beat Wellington Phoenix 4-3 in one of the games of the season. Carl Robinson's side have two wins from two after a three-game winless run left their place in the top six less secure in early March.

It's the first meeting between the two sides in 2020/21 after Perth handed the Wanderers three defeats from three games in the 2019/20 A-League campaign.
