Speaking of Victory, they welcome last-placed Western Sydney Wanderers in what is a great opportunity for Jeff Hopkins’ side to extend their lead at the top.

And while that game rages on, Canberra United will have to negotiate a Sydney FC side looking for their second win of the 2018/19 Season and smarting from a 3-2 loss to Victory.

Perth Glory have the bye following their 5-2 demolition of Melbourne City at home.

Newcastle Jets v Brisbane Roar
Thursday, 7:30pm AEDT

Note: This fixture has moved from No.2 Sportsground to McDonald Jones Stadium, KO 7:30pm AEDT.

It’s fourth versus fifth as Newcastle Jets host Brisbane Roar in this week's fixture on FOX SPORTS 505.

The Jets have recorded back-to-back wins and clean sheets, suggesting Craig Deans’ side are building some momentum near the halfway point of the 2018/19 Season.

Emily van Egmond has been reliable as ever for club and country this year, and will come up against some familiar faces in the spine of the park.

Kingsley
The Jets celebrating Jenna Kinglsey's winner against Western Sydney Wanderers.

Her Westfield Matildas teammates, Katrina Gorry and Clare Polkinghorne will no doubt try to nullify the towering centre-midfielder and cause some problems of their own.

Brisbane Roar return from their bye in Round 4, which may have in fact come at an opportune time for the club.

Mel Andreatta’s side fell 1-0 to a resurgent Adelaide United outfit in Round 3 giving them over a week to recover and refine their game ahead of this six-pointer.

How to watch: Tune in to FOX SPORTS 505 to catch this clash, with kick-off at 7:30pm AEDT. Melbourne City v Adelaide United
Saturday, 7:30pm AEDT

Who would have thought going into Round 5 Melbourne City would be second from the bottom, and Adelaide United would be unbeaten and in the mix for top spot?

That is not to discredit both teams — rather, it is credit to the recruitment and performances of a resilient Reds outfit.

Adelaide travel to Melbourne City’s C. B. Smith Reserve on the back of a convincing 2-0 victory over finals hopefuls, Canberra United.

Latsko

More importantly, the Reds go into this clash following three consecutive clean sheets - a first in the club’s history.

City, meanwhile, must turn their form around promptly.

They showed some promising signs in their Westfield W-League 2018 Grand Final replay in Round 2, registering a comprehensive 3-1 victory over Sydney.

However, a 2-0 loss to bitter rivals Melbourne Victory, followed by a 5-2 humbling at Perth on Sunday, means City must arrest this slide as quickly as possible.

Anything other than a win would put them six or more points from top spot, and would make almost every game from here on in a must-win.

Melbourne Victory v Western Sydney Wanderers
Sunday, 4:00pm AEDT

First versus last, goals versus blanks.

High-flying Melbourne Victory host a Western Sydney Wanderers side bereft of goals and points in the 2018/19 Season.

Full credit must go to Jeff Hopkins and his side. Victory have a healthy crop of youngsters, propped up by experienced stalwarts, who are well-organised in defence and lethal in attack.

Dowie
Natasha Dowie in motion as she converts a penalty against Sydney FC, and her second goal of the match.

Melbourne’s navy blue outfit has also been helped by a red-hot Natasha Dowie, who is averaging a goal in every game.

The same cannot be said for Western Sydney Wanderers.

Four fixtures have yielded four losses, and four consecutive games in which the side have failed to register a goal.

Round 4 offered some hope for Dan Barrett’s side, but in gifting Newcastle the winner, they condemned themselves to an unenviable position, making finals football a big ask.

Canberra United v Sydney FC
Sunday, 4:00pm AEDT

Sydney FC head to the nation’s capital in a fixture where both sides will want nothing less than a win.

Both Canberra United and Sydney FC started their seasons so promisingly. Canberra appeared to be the real deal with a 2-0 victory over Champions Melbourne City, while Sydney walloped their bitter rivals Western Sydney Wanderers 3-0 in their own backyard.

A month is a long time in football though, as seen by the change of fortunes for both clubs. Neither team has registered a win since those fixtures, and a loss for either side would put them uncomfortably far from a finals spot.

Alanna Kennedy
Alanna Kennedy celebrates her goal against Melbourne Victory.

Interestingly, the teams’ bottom-half positions on the ladder are not an accurate reflection on the football that may be on show on Sunday afternoon.

McKellar Park will have up to six Westfield Matildas on show for the important clash, so one can expect no shortage of quality as the two sides do battle.
