How to watch Westfield W-League Round 6

Just when we thought the Westfield W-League couldn’t serve up any more surprises, Round 5 gave us the round of the season, leaving us chomping at the bit for more action.

Adelaide United and Perth Glory raise the Round 6 curtains on Thursday night, with both sides on equal points and desperate to catch runaway leaders Melbourne Victory who have the bye.

Friday night action returns to Spotless Stadium for the double-header, as Western Sydney Wanderers look to build on their first goal of the 2018/19 Season against a fiery Canberra United.

And then what better way to end the weekend with some mouth-watering, Sunday afternoon football?

In an early kick-off, Newcastle Jets host a Melbourne City side smarting from their disappointing 1-1 draw with Adelaide.

Then at 4pm AEDT, Sydney FC host Brisbane Roar at Seymour Shaw in a game that will go a long way to defining each side’s seasons.

Adelaide United v Perth Glory
Thursday, 7:30pm AEDT

The equation is simple: A win puts either side two points behind Melbourne Victory, while a draw does neither side a favour.

So who will blink first?

Melbourne City

Sam Kerr takes on her Westfield Matilda teammate Michelle Heyman with the Perth starlet appearing to find her best form.

Heyman might not be banging in goals as she did for Canberra United, but her skilful dummy at the death against Melbourne City in Round 5 showed she’s more than just a goalscorer.

Marden Sports Complex hosts the league’s best defence against the league’s best attack, so do the maths: Thursday night is set to be a cracker.

Western Sydney Wanderers v Canberra United
Friday, 5:20pm AEDT

Canberra United travel to Spotless Stadium with some wind in their sails, and that’s not just because of the gusts McKellar Park served up in Round 5.

Heather Garriock’s team were dominant against Sydney FC and could have embarrassed the Sky Blues, were it not for Aubrey Bledsloe’s incredible athleticism.

Rhoda Mulaudzi is back to her goalscoring ways, while Karly Roestbakken is maturing into a seriously impressive midfielder.

For Western Sydney, their search for that first point of the 2018/19 Season seems far more likely following their performance against ladder-leaders Melbourne Victory.

Kylie Ledbrook’s 40-metre screamer captures the optimism Dan Barrett’s side will need if they are to kickstart their campaign.

Newcastle Jets v Melbourne City
Sunday, 2:30pm AEDT

Not many punters would have predicted Newcastle Jets and Melbourne City to be this far off the pace at this point in the 2018/19 Season.

Yet, here we are.

The two sides have a combined three wins between them, and best start stringing some wins together or risk falling too far off the pace.

Emily Condon and Yukari Kinga

Newcastle were outclassed by Brisbane Roar in Round 5 but return to McDonald Jones Stadium knowing three points is a must.

Likewise, Melbourne City needs a win as we near the halfway point of the competition.

Their 1-1 draw with Adelaide was seconds away from a well-earned victory, were it not for Georgia Campagnale’s heroics at the death.

Regardless, City’s Westfield Matildas stocks in Elise Kellond-Knight, Kyah Simon and Lydia Williams are all starting to hit their straps.

Sydney FC v Brisbane Roar
Sunday, 4pm AEDT

Sydney FC face Brisbane Roar for the first time since their 3-1 loss to Mel Andreatta’s side in Round 1 of the 2017/18 Season.

While both sides would go on to have fruitful campaigns, the same cannot be said for this year.

Sydney FC have lost three on the trot but in Ante Juric’s defence, he has seldom had a full complement of players due to injuries and international commitments.

Brisbane

This clash at Seymour Shaw will therefore present the Sky Blues with their first full week of preparation injury- and distraction-free.

For Brisbane, a win would put them three points behind Melbourne Victory and within touching distance of a second consecutive Premiership.

Andreatta has built a dangerous side anchored by a solid spine in Katrina Gorry, Clare Polkinghorne and Mackenzie Arnold.
