Jets eye Victory in TV match

What an opportunity is in the offing for Newcastle Jets on Sunday as they seek to put one hand on a semi-final ticket in front of the Fox Sports/ABC TV cameras.

Melbourne Victory are the visitors this week, and their own performance last Sunday on nationwide TV screens suggests they are a team that offer plenty of entertainment value.

It promises to be a wonderful occasion for the players on Hunter Stadium’s lush turf, while the fans can also enjoy the Hyundai A-League match which follows between the same two clubs.

Newcastle have not made the play-offs for seven seasons, and a victory here would guarantee at least a share of fourth heading into the final fortnight.

A few weeks back Newcastle lost 1-0 to high-flying Melbourne City when they last played in front of the TV cameras, and it was a performance that proved the Jets’ fighting qualities.

Newcastle might be short on star-power but they are big on heart. Aside from a stunning 5-1 loss to Adelaide United a fortnight ago, the Jets have conceded just four goals in their other eight matches.

Earlier in the season they won 1-0 at Melbourne Victory in a tight and tough encounter. TV viewers can expect a similarly knife-edge contest to kick-start the New Year.

Watch all the action Live from 2.00pm nationally on Fox Sports (Channel 505), or ABC TV. Or catch-up on ABC iView.
