Adelaide United-s Women-s Team will be looking to get back onto the winner-s list and keep their chance of playing finals alive when they host the Central Coast Mariners Women at Hindmarsh Stadium this Saturday (6 December 2008) in Round 7 of the Westfield W-League.
Going down at home for the first time this season in last weekend-s loss to Melbourne Victory, the Lady Reds dropped to sixth on the table but significantly still only two points outside the top four.
With the Mariners one spot back in seventh place, three points for The Reds would be seen as a must against the girls from Gosford.
“After last week-s disappointing loss we need to bounce back with a strong performance this week,” United Women-s Coach Mike Barnett said.
“The team understands another loss could see the end of our season so I expect a spirited and committed group of players to get us back on the winners list.”
The Reds have been bolstered by the return of former Westfield Matildas goalkeeper Emma Wirkus for the match, while at the other end of the park Sandra Scalzi could be injected straight into the starting eleven after recovering from hand surgery.
“With the return of Sandra Scalzi we have a more attacking line up in mind as we need to keep our top four chances alive with a win,” Barnett said.
While Barnett welcomes back some handy inclusions, he will unfortunately be without Leah Robinson for the rest of the season, the classy Canadian midfielder returning home after her stint with United ended last weekend.
Concerning for Barnett is that his team has only managed one clean sheet in the opening six rounds, The Reds needing to tighten up defensively in order to shut out the Central Coast.
With just four games to go in the minor round, time is running out for Adelaide United-s Women to crack into the top four, and if The Reds are to feature in the finals series, a win at home against the Mariners is vital.
The match against Central Coast Mariners kicks off at 3.30pm (ACDT) and will be televised LIVE on the ABC 1. Tickets will be available from the Holden Street gate at Hindmarsh Stadium.
