Match preview: Adelaide United v Melbourne Victory

Adelaide United will be searching for an improved defensive effort when they host Melbourne Victory in the Westfield W-League at Marden Sports Complex on Friday evening (kickoff 7:30pm AEDT).

United boasted the Westfield W-League’s meanest defence after five matches, having conceded just three goals in an eye-catching unbeaten run.

But Ivan Karlovic’s side shipped four second-half goals in a 5-2 loss at Sydney FC last week, a result that they will be desperate to rectify against the table-topping Victory.

EXTRA TIME: Veronica Latsko's life of coffees, koalas and loving Adelaide United

American Veronica Latsko has scored six goals for United this season but said after that defeat they had to keep focused on their stubborn defence.

“We want to win, getting goals is great and all - but that’s not the end goal,” Latsko told Fox Sports.

United kept a clean sheet in their last match against Victory, a goalless draw in the season-opener for both sides.

And they did beat Victory in the only other clash between the two in 2018, a 2-1 success back in February.

Meanwhile, Melbourne Victory will want blood after their unbeaten streak was snapped in a 4-3 loss to Brisbane Roar.

Victory threw the kitchen sink at Brisbane but were unable to restore parity, even after the Roar went down to 9 women in the closing stages after Katrina Gorry received her marching orders and Carson Pickett sustained a concussion.

If this cloud ever had a silver lining, it would be in the shape of Natasha Dowie who now has six goals and one assist in six games.

Fireworks and bitter rivalry are just two of the myriad features you can expect to see in this blockbuster.
