Match preview: Canberra United v Adelaide United

Five points outside the top four, and with three games remaining, Canberra United host Adelaide United in a must-win Westfield W-League clash on Sunday afternoon.

Heather Garriock’s side started the 2018/19 Season so brightly with a 2-0 win over Melbourne City, and downed Sydney FC by the same scoreline weeks later, yet have failed to consistently recreate those types of performances.

Now, winless in their last four, Canberra United find themselves in a position where anything other than a loss will deal them a serious blow to their finals aspirations.

Adelaide started their season on a similarly positive note, so much so that they remained unbeaten until their 5-2 loss to Sydney FC in Round 7.

The wheels didn’t fall off though, as Adelaide bounced back with 3-2 wins over Melbourne Victory and Newcastle Jets, and find themselves four points off top spot.

Canberra are reeling from a 1-0 loss to Perth Glory on Thursday night, perhaps feeling somewhat disappointed considering the game remained equally poised for so long.

Just when it seemed as though the honours would be even, Sam Kerr was fouled in the box and converted the ensuing penalty, giving Canberra little to show for the efforts.

The Reds will head into Sunday afternoon with some confidence from the reverse fixture back in Round 4.

On that November night, Veronica Latsko grabbed a goal on 27 minutes before Natasha Prior turned the ball into her own net, giving Adelaide a 2-0 win at Coopers Stadium.

And, having stolen a 3-2 win at the death against Newcastle Jets in Round 9, Adelaide will be buoyant as ever as they make the journey east to McKellar Park.
