Match preview: Melbourne City v Adelaide United

Adelaide United's unbeaten start to the Westfield W-League season will be put to the test when they take on desperate champions Melbourne City on Saturday.

The Reds have been one of the surprise packets of the early rounds, sitting in third spot with two wins and a draw from their opening three games.

Adelaide have built their strong start on a miserly defence, yet to concede a goal this campaign, and bolstered their squad with the signing of former Red, Isabel Hodgson.

But they have never beaten City in Melbourne, underlining the size of the task ahead at C.B Smith Reserve.

However, City – champions for the last three seasons – have yet to hit their straps in 2018/19, with just a solitary win from their opening four games.

They head into this one having slumped to a crushing 5-2 defeat to a Sam Kerr-inspired Perth Glory last weekend.

If City are to be a serious contender for another title, you get the sense they’ll want to start picking up wins immediately.

It all adds up to what should be a cracking contest on Saturday night.
