Match preview: Newcastle Jets v Perth Glory

Saturday afternoon is crucial for both sides, albeit for different reasons, as Newcastle Jets host a free-flowing Perth Glory in the Westfield W-League on Saturday afternoon.

Currently outside the top four by seven points, Newcastle are approaching ‘now-or-never’ territory, where anything other than a victory can have serious consequences for their finals hopes.

Perth, meanwhile, are three points off the pace of ladder-leaders Melbourne Victory, and have a Round 14 showdown with Jeff Hopkins’s side in what is shaping up to be a winner-takes-all clash.

The last time these two sides met in Round 7, Larissa Crummer received her marching orders on 26 minutes, yet the Jets held on for an inspiring 2-2 draw.

Leticia McKenna and Sam Kerr got on the scoreboard for the hosts, scoring either side of Katie Stengel’s two-minute, first-half brace.

More recently, despite another week of Britt Eckerstrom heroics, the Jets were dealt a cruel 3-1 defeat to Sydney FC in Round 10.

Libby Copus-Brown scored one of the goals of the 2018/19 Season, but it began only a brief comeback as Savannah McCaskill’s second goal of the afternoon condemned Newcastle to their second consecutive loss, leaving them winless in their last five.

On the contrary, Perth grabbed their second win in three games following a rugged 1-0 victory over Canberra United on Thursday night.

The game appeared destined for a draw before Sam Kerr was brought down in the box, converting her penalty on 85 minutes.

That goal was her ninth in eight games, meaning Kerr leads the Golden Boot race with four rounds remaining.

As important as that is, Kerr will no doubt be focussed on ensuring Perth grab all three points and stay within touching distance of Melbourne Victory.

Ins and outs

To be announced on Thursday.
