Preview: Brisbane Roar v Adelaide United

There is little margin for error for both sides on Sunday as Brisbane Roar host Adelaide United in front of the Fox Sports/ABC TV cameras.

Brisbane are now five points behind leaders Melbourne City and Sydney FC, having played a game more than the former. They can ill afford to slip to eight points off the pace at this relatively early juncture, and will have marked this fixture down as one to win.

The match has also been marked as a special event at Suncorp Stadium with a kids-go-free offer in place (see the Brisbane Roar website for specific details). It promises to be a gala day on Sunday with the Westfield W-League match followed by the Hyundai A-League encounter between the same two clubs.

Brisbane may have only won two of their five matches thus far, but they have already played against three of the competition heavyweights – Melbourne City, Sydney FC and Canberra United. Their Westfield Matildas personnel are always reliable, but internationals imports Nina Frausing-Pedersen (Denmark) and Maddy Evans (United States) are also now starting to find their form. The Roar hope to be virtually at full strength for the match.

Things, however, aren’t looking so bright for Adelaide. Defender Monica is currently back in Brazil competing in her nation’s annual home four-nations event. Unfortunately experienced forward Racheal Quigley is back on the injured list, as are young guns Grace Abbey and Alexandra Chidiac. Adelaide secured a famous upset win in the Sunshine State three ago, and while a United victory is not out of the question, it is the Roar who will start as favourites.
