Preview: Brisbane Roar v Perth Glory

Some of Australia’s greatest attacking players will be on display this Sunday across nationwide TV screens when Brisbane Roar host Perth Glory.

The Glory boasts a rare combination of x-factor in Sam Kerr and Caitlin Foord, while the Roar can look to prolific goalscorer Tameka Butt and long-range specialist Katrina Gorry.

Brisbane will perhaps start as favourites on home turf and they have two wins already in the pocket from three outings. And they know that another win here will give them second spot, leaving them best placed in the chase of runaway leaders Melbourne City.

Brisbane may have lost plenty of key personnel during the off-season, but early performances suggest the transition has been relatively smooth. And they have been further boosted this week by the arrival of hugely experienced New Zealand international midfielder Kirsty Yallop.

The Glory have likewise been aided by an international signing with well-regarded USA youth international Vanessa DiBernardo arriving from Chicago Red Stars. The midfielder was a key member of the Stars and Stripes’ side which won the U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2012, a team which produced 2015 Women’s World Cup winners Julie Johnston and Morgan Brian.

The match will be a special moment for former long-serving Roar player Kim Carroll who will line up against her former side for the first time.

Perth have secured just one win from their four outings thus far, but there is cause for optimism after last weekend’s luckless 1-0 loss at Sydney FC.
