A potentially classic Westfield W-League encounter lies in store for national TV viewers and local fans as the champions host the competition’s most successful club on Sunday.
The match also marks Brisbane Roar’s first return to Melbourne since losing to the Victory in last season’s Grand Final. Incredibly that is Melbourne Victory’s only win over the Roar in 13 matches.
If they double their number of wins over Brisbane, or in fact even draw, the Roar’s finals aspirations will be extinguished with two rounds remaining.
So while the equation is simple for the Roar, the Victory also have little room to move. A win will keep alive their hopes of a top-two finish and a home semi-final, but defeat will open up the prospect of missing the finals altogether.
The good news for the home side is that the central defensive pairing of Emma Checker and Lauren Barnes return, while youngster Beattie Goad is also available after performing well for the Westfield Young Matildas on their recent trip to Vietnam.
So too, Belinda Wilson has plenty of option to choose from with the return of her national team quartet and also Westfield Matildas defender Laura Alleway from injury.
The pair met just a month ago and played out a torrid 1-1 draw in a high-tempo, high-quality contest. A repeat of that will make for superb viewing for TV fans and local fans alike.
