Preview: Melbourne Victory v Newcastle Jets

An exciting contest looms at Lakeside Stadium as two new-look sides do battle following a promising round one outing.

Melbourne Victory collected a hugely entertaining 3-3 draw at Adelaide United, while Newcastle Jets pushed heavy-hitters Melbourne City to their very limit before suffering a 1-0 defeat.

The Jets will thus be making their second trip to Victoria within a matter of a week. This time last year the Jets collected a 1-0 win at the Victory, though their overall record stands at just two wins in 12 attempts.

Newcastle’s American imports seem to have added a solid core to an already resolute side. Only Melbourne City and Canberra United conceded fewer goals last season, and the Jets look like they will be hugely tough to beat once again.

There was disappointing news in midweek for the Victory with Melissa Taranto falling victim to the knee curse and out for the season. On the flip side, Laura Spiranovic could be in line for a welcome return after a year out.

Much focus will be on the combination between striker Natasha Dowie and No10 Christine Nairn, a  pairing which shapes as a highly profitable one for the Victory this season.
