Preview: Newcastle Jets v Melbourne City

A Westfield W-League classic looms in Coffs Harbour as Newcastle Jets host Melbourne City in a shootout for the fourth and final semi-final berth.

The equation is simple – a win will guarantee a ticket to the play-offs, while a draw will be enough for the visitors.

City still boast an outside chance of a top-two finish and even a home semi-final should results go their way.

As for Newcastle, ending an eight-year finals’ drought is the rich prize on offer. Last season they fell agonisingly short of a first appearance in the play-offs since season one.

And the Jets appear to be hitting form just at the right time if their morale-boosting 3-1 win over Sydney FC is any gauge.

City collected a tough 1-0 win against the Jets in the opening round.

Last weekend the champions returned to winning ways with a crucial 2-1 triumph over Brisbane Roar to end a six-match winless run.

It will be the first match from the national competition to be played in Coffs Harbour, at the same venue that memorably hosted the Westfield Matildas during their 2008 Beijing Olympic Games campaign.

Whatever the result it promises to be a gala occasion on the NSW mid-North Coast, with the match to be followed by the Hyundai A-League encounter between the Jets and the Tim Cahill-led City.
