Preview: Newcastle Jets v Melbourne City

Newcastle Jets have impressed hugely so far in the Westfield W-League but they face their sternest examination yet as Melbourne City visit on Sunday.

The match will take place in front of the Fox Sports/ABC TV cameras, and is a rare outing on the city’s main stadium for the Jets.

Throw in the inarguable rare quality of the visiting team, and it makes for a special treat for local fans – one not to be missed.

The home side have impressed with their resilience, organisation and competance throughout this season under new coach Craig Deans.

Incredibly they have conceded just three goals – all from set-pieces – which, along wih City, is the lowest in the competition.

Now though they face a City side who are on target to break the competition’s goalscoring record. And in top-scorer Larissa Crummer they have a striker who has nabbed an incredible tally of ten goals from just six outings in City colours.

Newcastle’s ability to defend against City’s rampant all-round attack is in itself a fascinating sub-plot for this encounter.

City have won all seven matches since they joined the competition, and are already inching closer to claiming the premiership. Few would be prepared to bet that this is the match where they stumble.
