Preview: Perth Glory v Adelaide United

Rivals from way back, this is sure to be a keenly-fought and entertaining encounter in the west as Perth Glory host Adelaide United.

Adelaide are sitting last, while third-placed Perth are within striking distance of winning the premiership

Whoever first made the claim that the table doesn’t lie, clearly didn’t have the 2016/17 Westfield W-League season in mind.

Last weekend Adelaide routed Western Sydney Wanderers 10-2, while the Glory crashed 7-2 in the nation’s capital. What will happen here in Perth on Sunday evening is anyone’s guess.

Perth Glory had enjoyed a rare run of form prior to their match against Canberra and coach Bobby Despotovski described it as a "wake-up call".

"You're going to lose games of football, it's as simple as that," he said. "It's how you rebound from them [that's important].”

Earlier this season, the Glory claimed an impressive 4-1 win in Adelaide. The Glory have lost just twice against the South Australians in 14 matches, and never have they lost at home against their rivals.

Adelaide cannot mathematically make the finals and on one level the pressure is off them. The home team, however, have the dual ambitions of the premiership and a home semi-final.

The outcome of the match may not be clear, but one thing seems assured: entertainment.

Adelaide, incredibly, are the second highest scorers in the competition.

The two teams line up with three of the five top-scorers in the competition. And in hometown heroine Sam Kerr, the Glory boast arguably the most in-form player in the competition.
