Preview: Perth Glory v Adelaide United

What a difference a year makes. Perth have slipped from premiership winners all the way down to the wrong end of the table within 12 months, as they approach the final home match of the season.

What a difference a year makes. Perth have slipped from premiership winners all the way down to the wrong end of the table within 12 months, as they approach the final home match of the season.

The Glory enter the penultimate round just a point clear of bottom spot, yet they still have a mathematical chance of reaching the finals.

It has been a tough debut for coach Bobby Despotovski who is now deprived of his two star recruits thank to injury. Sam Kerr has been out since November, while Caitlin Foord suffered an unfortunate broken collar bone in a heavy challenge last weekend. Now they seem set to lose another national team player for this match due to injury – goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold.

Yet there have been famous win along the way, most notably at Brisbane Roar. Evidence, if any were needed, of their ability to knock over strong opposition.

There have been few such injury concerns for Adelaide this season, and they again expect to head into this weekend’s match with a near full squad, aside from the possible absence of goalscorer Tiarn Powell.

Adelaide’s hold on fourth and a first-ever final berth has become tenuous in the extreme over recent weeks as Brisbane Roar and Newcastle Jets close.

If they are to achieve their much-anticipated semi-final breakthrough, then a win this weekend is desperately needed ahead of a final-round match against Canberra.

The pair met earlier in the season and the 1-1 draw in Adelaide could have gone either way.

Adding an extra layer of intrigue is the return of Adelaide coach and Glory legend Jamie Harnwell to Perth for the first time since his off-season exit.
