Preview: Perth Glory v Newcastle Jets

An intriguing fixture awaits as premiers Perth Glory host a new-look Newcastle Jets playing their first match of the season.

The Glory secured a handy 2-1 comeback win at Melbourne Victory last weekend but it took the attacking quality of Westfield Matildas pair Caitlin Foord and Sam Kerr to do so.  That pair, and also keeper Mackenzie Arnold, will all be absent this weekend on Australia duty, and they leave huge holes to fill.

One of the few positives for the Glory is the availability of American midfielder Nikki Stanton who has linked with the club, after spending the past season at New Jersey-based Sky Blue FC alongside Foord and Kerr.

The Jets are yet to win in seven trips across the Nullarbor, but this weekend represents one of their best opportunities to do so. The ability of the Jets to gel in their first outing of the Westfield W-League season could go a long way to determining their hopes of victory in the west.

Through the arrivals door is some decent talent in the shape of captain Gema Simon, Chloe Logarzo and under-rated forward Jenna Kingsley. Fans will also have their first look at what international imports Megan Oyster and Caprice Dydasco will bring, with both arriving from Washington Spirit.

“We’re going to look to our big signings to make an impact,” said coach Craig Deans. “Our US signings, our Matildas and our experienced senior players are going to be crucial this season.”
