Preview: Perth Glory v Sydney FC

A fascinating encounter rounds out Round 6 in Perth on Sunday evening as the Glory host Sydney FC in a match that could go a long way to proving the credentials of both teams.

Sydney FC sit top with four wins from five outings, though not all their victories have been completely convincing. Last weekend’s 2-1 win over Newcastle Jets being a case in point. The Glory, for their part, have seven points from four outings and a win here would really put them in amongst the competition’s big players.

These two teams share a fascinating history, perhaps highlighted by a memorable 3-0 win for the Glory in a home semi-final two years ago. Sydney, though, once recorded a barely believable 11-0 win over Perth in a competition record score, while the tables were turned when the Glory won 7-5 in another competition high.

The match will be highlighted by the return to Perth of Westfield Matildas star Caitlin Foord, in her first match since recently being crowned Asian Player of the Year. The competition’s curse of the keepers struck Perth last week, with Melissa Maizels set for a lengthy spell out after injuring her finger in the 2-0 win at Melbourne Victory last weekend.

Glory skipper Sam Kerr says her side are primed for a strong showing. "I'm really excited to play at home, we play our best football at home," Kerr said. "We're really excited for Sydney...we're really looking to take it to them.”
