Preview: Perth Glory v Western Sydney Wanderers

Two sides with similar ambitions of reaching the top-four will match-up as Perth Glory host Western Sydney Wanderers.

The match will take on extra resonance in the west as the Glory women have a rare chance to share a double-bill with their male counterparts, with the Hyundai A-League kicking-off earlier in the afternoon.

Both sides failed to make the play-offs last season, and stepping up to the next level is the minimum aim. Indeed, Glory skipper Sam Kerr says she will be “disappointed” if the team falls short of the top-four berth.

The pair have also endured significant turnover of playing personnel. But the Glory are looking much stronger down the spine of the team compared to last season with Alyssa Mautz, Vanessa DiBernardo and Arianna Romero all international imports seeking to link with team lynchpin Kerr.

The Wanderers, for their part, will be without a quartet of young players away on Westfield Young Matildas duty, including rising star Ellie Carpenter and goalkeeping prodigy Jada Whyman. Like so many teams, the Wanderers also have their share of American imports with Katie Stengel and Paige Nielsen joining veteran Kendall Fletcher.

History, however, is against the Wanderers. They have managed just one win in eight attempts against the Glory. There could hardly be a better time to change that statistic if they are to enjoy a breakthrough campaign and reach their maiden finals series.
