Western Sydney Wanderers approach their first home game of the season against Brisbane Roar, seeking to reprise one of the most famous wins in the club’s short three-year history.
Marconi Stadium, one of football’s famous old venues, will play host to one of the nation’s newest clubs as the two-time champions visit Sydney’s west.
Last season the Wanderers somehow recovered from a record defeat to beat the all-star Roar in their own backyard for a truly memorable victory.
Having lost numerous Westfield Matildas during the off-season, the Roar are no longer the intimidating force they once were. Of course their current internationals will also be away this weekend and the absence of Katrina Gorry, Tameka Butt and Clare Polkinghorne would leave a massive void for any side to fill.
On the plus side, there are internationally experienced players in the form of Amy Chapman and Emily Gielnik. American Haley Kopmeyer looks the goods in goal, while former Perth Glory attacker Gabe Marzano seems to improve with every outing.
And the Roar showed in last weekend’s impressive 2-1 win over champions Canberra United, they are still very much a force to be reckoned with.
As for the Wanderers, they showed plenty of promise in their 2-2 draw at Adelaide. The side is once again a curious mixture of experience and raw youth.
Unfortunately they are set to lose plenty of quality this week in the absence of Caitlin Cooper and Hannah Beard, with Linda O’Neill also in doubt. However in American midfielder Keelin Winters, who scored three minutes into the season last weekend, they have an inspirational presence who would walk into any Westfield W-League side.
