What a match awaits at Central Coast Stadium as the unheralded Wanderers tackle champions Canberra United with second spot potentially up for grabs.
Few would have predicted such a scenario at the start of the season with Western Sydney Wanderers boasting a young and largely unknown squad.
The Wanderers, however, have been a revelation and their unexpected showing has been somewhat of a metaphor for this season’s Westfield W-League where upsets have been standard.
The Wander Women have never previously reached the Westfield W-League finals, and they are yet to defeat Canberra in five previous attempts.
And they will rarely have a better opportunity to knock over the team from the nation’s capital, with Canberra without a trio of stars players absent on Westfield Matildas duty – Michelle Heyman, Caitlin Munoz and Lydia Williams.
The Wanderers, in contrast, are effectively at full strength and will hope to have a sizeable support on hand, with the match to precede the Hyundai A-League contest between the Wanderers and Central Coast Mariners.
It will be the second opportunity for the youthful Wanderers side to strut their stuff in front of the Fox Sports/ABC TV cameras. And the match will be particularly poignant for Wanderers attacker Helen Petinos whose partner – Central Coast Mariners midfielder Anthony Caceres – will be on show in the second match of the afternoon.
The match, which takes place at the halfway point of the 14-round season, will be yet another opportunity for the Wanderers to provide evidence of their new-found status, while for United it will be an opportunity to build momentum after a stuttering start to the season.
