Preview: Western Sydney Wanderers v Melbourne Victory

Western Sydney Wanderers will never have a better time to end their winless run against Melbourne Victory than this Sunday at Marconi Stadium.

The Wanderers have never won against the Victory collecting just a single point from five matches between the pair. This season, however, the Wanderers have collected four points from as many matches while the Victory, in contrast, have suffered four successive defeats.

It is a far cry from Dave Edmondson’s last season in charge two years when he led the Victory to their maiden Westfield W-League title. Last weekend reached a new low for the Victory when they crashed to a 4-0 loss against Adelaide United, and things went from bad to worse with a red card for captain and skipper Melissa Barbieri who thus must sit out the visit to Sydney.

They will hope to have experienced defender Thea Slatyer back in the line-up for this visit to her hometown, but it looms as another massive test for the Victory.

The Wanderers might be short on star-power but they have proven themselves to be a resilient bunch who can provide a tough match for any opponent. So far this season they have collected a draw at Adelaide United, and last weekend won 2-1 at the hitherto impressive Newcastle Jets.

The match-up in the heart of midfield between American stars Keelin Winters and the Victor’s Christine Nairn should be worth the price of admission alone.
