An intriguing post-Christmas contest is set for western Sydney as the Wanderers host Newcastle Jets in what shapes as a season-defining contest for both.
The pair sit a win outside fourth spot, and defeat would almost be a fatal blow. Victory, however, would be enough to move alongside Adelaide United heading into the season finale.
For the Jets, much will depend on their powers of recovery. They somehow slipped to a hefty 5-1 home defeat last week, in the process concedede more goals than they have done throughout the entire season.
But the Jets have already proved themselves to be a resilient bunch this term under new boss Craig Deans, and it would be a major surprise if they didn’t rediscover their old defensive solidity. They have too much class across the park for that not to happen.
They Jets also have a small matter of revenge to wreck upon the Wanderers. When the pair meet during November, the Wanderers came from behind to claim a heart-breaking injury-time win.
For the Wanderers a maiden finals berth remains a possibility. There is little to no news coming out of the Wanderers camp this week suggesting that pressure is building as the opportunity to achieve some milestone success looms ever closer.
Last weekend off proved well timed for the Wanderers who had been suffering under a mini injury crisis. Linda O’Neill exited before half-time in that match against Melbourne Victory, however captain Caitlin Cooper is edging ever closer to an injury return.
