Sydney FC hot-shot rapt with return to winning ways
Going top of the Westfield W-League Golden Boot tally was just the start of the positives for Sydney FC’s Remy Siemsen on Sunday afternoon.
The striker delivered a goal in each half for the Sky Blues, as the defending Champions returned to form with a commanding 2-0 win away to Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium.
The return was her third double haul of the season and took the Young Matildas representative top of the competition’s scoring charts with six goals this season.
Speaking post-match to Fox Sports, the former NAB Young Footballer of the Year suggested she is hungry for more goals in coming weeks.
“I was extremely happy to get back on the score sheet and finish my chances today,” Siemsen said.
“I think I could’ve gotten a few more, but that’s okay. I will take the two.”
Following a last-start defeat to league leaders Melbourne City, Ante Juric’s side were at their barnstorming best for much of the clash in Newcastle as they notched an astounding 34 shot attempts against the Jets.
Siemsen said there was no secret to their rapid turnaround in fortunes that delivered their third clean sheet from five games this season.
“I think we just relaxed and played our game,” she explained.
“I think last week we played a bit more panicked. We came back to the basics, we went back to the drawing board and we just executed our chances.”
With her red-hot scoring form putting her ahead of a raft of Westfield Matildas and imported talent in the Golden Boot race, Siemsen could be forgiven for being overjoyed with her season so far.
However, she explained it is the return of American attacker Veronika Latsko to the squad from injury, that could deliver even more fruitful returns in the final third as the season draws on.
“I think I am more happy for V [Latsko] to be back,” Siemsen said.
“She has worked extremely hard to get back and made such an impact when she came on. I am looking forward to continuing to work with her this season.”
This campaign marks Siemsen’s return to Sydney FC after making her debut for the club as a sixteen-year-old in the 2016–17 season.
Sydney FC have a huge derby against Western Sydney Wanderers in Round 6 at Bankwest Stadium on Friday, December 20. The match kicks off at 5pm AEDT as part of a double-header with the Hyundai A-League.
