Ubogagu fires Roar to drought-breaking win over Jets

Brisbane Roar have earnt their first win over Newcastle Jets since 2014 after triumphing 1-0 at McDonald Jones Stadium on Thursday night.

Chioma Ubogagu’s second half goal was enough to see the Roar emerge victorious from the Hunter in what was a gritty performance.

Both sides struggled to find their groove early on and the first 15 minutes passed without any major chances.

That all changed however as Brisbane began to flex their muscles, slowly but surely gaining control of the fixture.

The Roar should have taken the lead through Anna Margraf but the forward inexplicably missed from directly in front after getting on the end of an Ubogagu cross.

Next up Japanese import Yuki Nagasato almost pipped Britt Eckerstrom at her near post but the Jets goalkeeper was equal to the challenge.

Eckerstrom pulled off another crucial save five minutes later, this time denying Clare Polkinghorne from range.

In what was almost a direct reversal of Margraf’s miss, Jets forward Jenna Kingsley scorned a chance from in front, skying her shot as the half drew to an end.

The match turned into an arm-wrestle after the break and it took an unorthodox build up to break the stalemate.

Nagasato picked up the ball in the penalty area but with the goal at her mercy she uncharacteristically scuffed her shot only for Ubogagu to mop up the result with a well-placed shot past Eckerstrom.

Brisbane looked comfortable with their lead as they wound down the clock but the Jets will feel hard done after creating a number of chances to earn an equaliser late on.
